R.I.P

Virginia Stanton, August 20th, 1920-March 11th, 2012.

A life well lived and a wonderful lady. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude to her for what she has done for our family. 100 lbs of pure generosity.

A really busy week.

Where are we today?
The Chateau at Lake San Marcos

On Monday the 27th we took Greg to San Diego Airport for his trip back home to Toronto. We went back to the condo at The Chateau and started getting the place ready for the visit of Virginia's friend from Seattle. Virginia and Ila have known each other for 80 years!! Now that is a friendship! Ila and her daughter, Peggy, arrived on Thursday March 1st and moved into the condo for 3 nights. Michael and I took the motorhome over to Bernardo Winery under the Harvest Hosts membership.

The Rat

Just by way of introduction, today's Guest Writer is my sister, Patricia.

Finding exactly the right Christmas gift for Virginia has been a perennial problem of mine for the past 33 years. Because how do you make the person who gave you your life (without actually having given birth to you) feel special? Since I was 21 I have been living in the US entirely as a result of Virginia's generosity and adventurous spirit. She was the one who hatched the plan that made it possible for me to travel to America in spite of having a passport the US didn't recognize (Rhodesian). She was the one to volunteer to sponsor me to come here as a student (the only way I could enter the US on my dud passport). And she was the one who opened her home and her heart to me while I studied at The American University in Washington, DC. And that's just for starters. Since then there have been amazing trips and gifts and lots and lots and lots of support, both material and otherwise. Along the way I have accumulated a husband, two children, several careers, many friends and a wealth of amazing experiences, none of which would have been mine without Virginia. With the greatest tact and discretion she has helped me, my sister and our dad over rough spots and never actually asked for anything in return.

Do see my problem?

Over the years, my family has pretty much run the gamut of "thoughtful" gifts - flowers, special books, movies, a little statue of the Chinese god of longevity (glad that one worked!), calenders made up of photos of my spawn, a needlepoint picture made with my own fair hands (agony for a non-sewer like me and never again repeated). The years have passed and it has become more and more difficult as Virginia has entered her "victory  lap" years. We all come into this life not needing too much in the way of "stuff" and we leave pretty much in the same state. Such is the stage dear Virginia now occupies. She is "shedding" rather than "accumulating". So, around about November of this past year, I was once more wracking my brain trying to think of what we could give Virginia for Christmas.

And then it came to me. We would give her a rat. (I will pause here so that you, dear readers, can thoroughly enjoy your frisson of horror........................)

Yes. A rat. A real one. Furry, with ears, whiskers and a tail. By the name of "Mojo".

But Mojo is not just any rat. He is a trainee HeroRAT and he lives in Tanzania where he is currently being taught how to detect landmines. Once trained, Mojo will join a rodent bomb squad that sniffs out landmines left by rotten humans. (Think of that the next time you turn up your nose at a rat, not one of which has ever left a bomb for children to step on.) In much the same way she once sponsored my education, Virginia (through our gift) is now sponsoring Mojo's "education." I do not, however, claim to be either as endearing or as useful as Mojo and my sense of smell isn't nearly as acute. Also, I'm not prepared to creep around on my hands and knees looking for landmines. Not even for Virginia.
Here is a little video to introduce you to Mojo and his buddies:

And here is a link to APOPO, the non-profit that runs the program: APOPO

And, finally, here is a touching letter sent out by Mojo a couple of days ago eulogizing his role model, Ziko, who has gone on to rat heaven: Mojo's Letter

I am delighted to say that Virginia is thrilled with her new rat. He really was the perfect gift for her because like Virginia, Mojo is brave, generous, and possessed of sweetness of spirit, a great sense of fun, a never-say-die attitude, adventurousness and killer cuteness. What could be more appropriate?

Addendum:
Dee writing: Now, my dear readers you know a good part of the story of Virginia. Sometime in the future I will fill in the rest, as promised. We might call her a HERO in her own right.

To add to this, she has just donated an additional $100 to the HeroRAT program.

Moving Day

Today we put the Seneca into storage and moved into Virginia's condo at the Chateau at Lake San Marcos.

After lunch we took Virginia down to Tri-Cities hospital to have more cortisone injected into her hips, in the hope that she will be able to walk again. She has also developed a urinary tract infection and is now on anti-biotics. One thing after another. I really pray that she will at least of her old life back.

Why is it so hard to cut the cord?

I have just had my 3rd night back in the Motorhome and I am still fretting over Virginia. Is she comfortable? Do they remember to turn her to prevent bed sores and to heal the ones she got while in Respite. Was she a little short of breath yesterday? Did she get her newspaper this morning? Are they managing to transfer her from wheelchair to recliner, or wheelchair to bed, or bed to commode without hurting her or scaring her by almost putting her on the floor? What's wrong with you, people? I did it alone for a month!

Today is very dull, with big soggy clouds rolling over the hill and then there are blue patches. I wonder if the sun or the rain will win. It is 17C (63F) at the moment. Better than the minus horrible degrees in Toronto!

I have been learning more about the Wifi Ranger and will update my review on my Mods and Stuff Page. It is fantastic!

A Staple??? Are you sure?

We moved V into her new room in the Assisted Living section of The Chateau yesterday. Her room is quite small, but we did manage to get her bed, a night stand, her recliner, a chair for visitors and a TV stand and TV in. She is quite comfortable and what is most important is that she is safe and being taken of 24 hours a day. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

We also took her to have X-rays of her hips and pelvis yesterday afternoon. There does not seem to be a fracture, but there is a very curious thing. There is a staple in her body on the right hand side, just above her hip joint. Not a surgical staple, a paper staple and what's more....it is open! The X-ray tech searched her clothing and on the table for the staple but did not find it anywhere. So it has to be in her. Very strange. The tech took us into the radiology department and we saw it on the X-rays. They took 3 just to be sure.

So here I am back at home in the Seneca and looking at RV Resort sites to see where we are going next. Would love to go to Caliente Springs or to Pismo Beach. Or maybe down to the San Diego area. We have several memberships so there is a great choice. Any suggestions?

We are moving out of Escondido RV Resort on February 15th and putting the RV into RV World Storage just 5 minutes from The Chateau. We will be staying in V's condo at the Chateau for a month.

Everything is moving so fast....

I may be off line for a few days as we are moving dearest Virginia into care on Thursday. I have a million forms to fill in (wish my sister was here).

The Seneca is going into storage nearby and Michael and I will be staying in the Chateau condo for a month to sort things out. During this time we may take a few short trips to a nearby beach or desert.

Our son comes for a few days toward the end of February and then my sister will be here at the end of March, just before we leave to return to Canada.

There will be intermittent posts, so please don't run away. I may even get V to do that post before the move.

Welcome to our 50th member, Gene and Judy. Thanks for coming along for the ride, which is somewhat bumpy at the moment. However we will be back on track before long.

On our way to Catalina Spa and RV Resort in Desert Hot Springs

Virginia is in Respite Care for 5 days and we have a spot at Catalina Spa in Desert Hot Springs. We arrived at this lovely resort at 4:30 pm. Pictures tomorrow. The drive up was very easy and uneventful. The weather is gorgeous. The valley is warm, but there is snow on the high mountain peaks around us. We are looking forward to exploring this part of the Coachella Valley.

Before we left, V was safely delivered to the rehab hospital for her 5 days of respite care. She seemed happy to be able to give us a bit of time away. Thank you, Virginia!

Off to Respite Care

I recommend the book "The Help". It did very well at the SAG awards and is well worth the read. The movie is also wonderful. If you buy from my site, remember that proceeds go to Breast Cancer Society in the name of Virginia.

After a discussion with V's hospice nurse this morning, V has requested to go to Respite Care for 5 days. She will go to one of the facilities that is accredited by Silverado Hospice. Hopefully, it will be in the local area. We may take the opportunity to go away for a few days. Carolyn will step in to see to V's needs while she is there. The cortisone into her hip did nothing to ease the pain, so she has spent the day in bed resting. We are now just waiting for a bed. Hopefully she will get placement in the next 2 to 3 days. In the meantime, I am still staying over on the sofa bed.

My sister's blog

My (very much younger) sister has a blog, Headuponastone.blogspot.com. She is a Quaker and has started a blog about her spiritual search and her experiences with Quakerism. She was also born in Rhodesia and then went to University in South Africa (Rhodes University) and became a journalist. On a cruise with our parents around South Africa back in the 70's they met Virginia....yes, the same Virginia. Virginia assisted her in coming to the US to do her Master's degree in Washington DC. After she finished University she stayed in the US, managing to get a job in the South African Embassy, and then with a South African newspaper. Eventually she met her husband, Simon, a Brit, who is also a journalist and involved in the news media in South Africa. They live in Maryland with close links to Washington DC. The link to her blog is above. Hope you enjoy it as much I do. P.S. It is her birthday today (the 27th) so this plug is for her.

Welcome to new reader, Mike Mills.

Spring has Sprung....well, in SoCal anyway

It is so warm here in North San Diego County that the trees are all blooming. High of 26C tomorrow. Fantastic.

Virginia had the injection of cortisone into her hip joint today this was done in the radiology department of the Tri-Cities Hospitals in Vista/Oceanside. She is still being transported in the wheelchair, but we are hopeful that she will be able to put weight on that hip soon.

I've left Michael!

To stay overnight at V's home. She is in a lot of pain from her Christmas Day fall and could not get out of bed this morning. The doc thinks it is a deep tissue injury with a hematoma which has burst. The bruising, which was not apparent the first few days, now reaches almost up to her waist. So here I am, sleeping in a building for the first time in a long while. She has been advised to take it easy with a minimal amount of walking. So no adventures this week. Hopefully next week she will be well enough to do something.

Meanwhile I have downloaded a couple of books for her to read on her new Kindle Touch. One of them is called Motohuma the Firehead by Jennifer Munro. It is the story of a girl born and raised in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe (where I was born and raised) whose family has a big secret. Quite an enjoyable read. The other one is The Peachkeeper.

Bought roast chicken and salad for dinner and two videos to watch, Secretariat and some Keanu Reeves movie. C'est la vie!

Wonderful Wednesday??? Not!

When we got over to Virginia's condo we found her in considerable pain. Pain in her pelvis/tail bone and also in her shoulders. So we did not go out for her Wonderful Wednesday. If she is feeling better tomorrow or the next day we will have a Thrilling Thursday or a Fantastic Friday instead. So we helped around the house with some chores that needed doing and went and did a bit of grocery shopping. The Chateau at San Marcos provides her with a 3-4 course meal every day, but she does like to have a few snacks on hand.

It was HOT here today with the temperature getting up to about 90F. The thing about this the weather here is that it cools down really quickly in the evening as there is no cloud cover to hold the heat in. So much like Rhodesia now called Zimbabwe. Makes me feel quite homesick.

News from California

News came from California this morning that Virginia is in hospital with pancreatitis. We are unable to leave at the moment so my sister, Patricia is flying out to California to be with her. She will be be there for 2 weeks, then we will see if I need to fly over to relieve her. Virginia said this morning that she is going to have surgery. I hope that she can handle the surgery at her age. At this time playing it by ear as to when I will go down.

Thursday: I just spoke to Virginia and she sounds much better. She is on a ton of antibiotics again and will not have the surgery until the infection in her pancreas has resolved. Patricia should be there soon for family support. I am very happy about that!
