Camping World in Hamburg, New York

Hamburg, NY

Tonight we are overnighting in Hamburg, NY. A few years ago this was our closest Camping World then it closed down. Our closest store became the one in Churchville. I was thrilled to see that Hamburg had opened again and so we came by here today and are staying overnight with 50 amp hookup!! Of course we have spent some money inside. A new satellite cable and a cable reel, some black tank deodorant and an Oxygenics shower head. I was tempted to buy the brushed nickel to match the rest of the plumbing in the RV, but instead I opted for the white as it was less than half the price. There have been so many good reports on this shower head that I am looking forward to trying it out. Does anyone know what we must get to be able to shut off the water when taking navy showers?

Boiler woes.

Where are we today?
Whitby, Ontario

Our daughter, son-in-law and 2 grand babies moved into the house over the weekend. We had been concerned about the water dripping out of the boiler for the heating system. It seemed a bit more than what we expected so we called in a heating technician who turned up early on Saturday morning, opened the boiler and immediately red tagged it. This means that we have to replace the boiler within 45 days as there is a real danger of carbon monoxide poisoning due to the rusted innards. The tech told us it was going to cost in the region of $13,000! GULP!!

On Monday the owner of the heating business came around and quoted us for replacing the boiler, re-working the piping, installing a new pressure release tank, a new liner for the flue and a pump to take the released water over to the basement drain. $9200 for the entire job, parts, labour and taxes. We do not have much time left here in Ontario, so what could we do?? They did the installation on Tuesday. What a great job they did, too. The heating is now safe and a lot more economical. We can go away, in the knowledge that our children and grandies are warm and safe over the next 20+ winters.

So we are now preparing to leave on Friday, before the next round of rain and before this back yard turns into a quagmire. First stop will probably be at the Camping World in Syracuse where we can, most likely get an overnight spot with electricity, then down to my sister in Keedysville, Maryland, for a few days.

We are in!

Where are we today?
Whitby, Ontario

We are at the house! After a week of running around moving furniture, boxes and gardening tools, we have left Cedar Beach Park and are now parked behind the house in Whitby. Suzanne and family move in on Saturday. We are going to sleep in the motor home until someone tells us we can't. There are some very curious looks from the neighbours.

The ground is really soft. We hope that we won't need a pull out!

16 Days!!

Where are we today?
Cedar Beach Park, Stouffville, Ontario

Just 16 days until we leave. What a crazy busy time we are having.

On Sunday we took our daughter, Suzanne and the two grandies to see the house. Her husband, Sandy, was at work. This was the first time that they had seen the inside. My instincts were right. Suzanne loved the house. It is practical enough for to be able to make it work for them, and quirky enough for her to fall in love with it.

There are some things that we need, cross bars for the roof rack on the car, a tow hitch, a lawnmower and garden equipment among them, I have been perusing Kijiji for Toronto and have found the cross bars and an almost new lawnmower. The car goes into the shop on Wednesday for the tow bar and a friend is getting rid of a pile of garden equipment as she has moved into a condo development. We just have to get snow removal equipment and that is about all for now.

Winter 2012-2013 travels.
I have been working on our upcoming trip and so far have come up with this route. This may change as we are not booking any RV resorts until the last minute.

I spoke (wrote) too soon....

Where are we today?
Cedar Beach Park, Stouffville, Ontario

We woke to below freezing this morning and wet snow. The car was covered in ice. Hello Winter!

Pretty much seals it for us. We will put the RV into temporary storage and move into the house. There will be an overlap of about 4 days after the kids move in which will be interesting, but as we will have a sofa bed there, we should be fine. It will give us a good idea of what fixes need to be done and to make sure all the systems are working.

6:00 pm About Turn!!

This afternoon I received a phone call from the Town of Whitby. After the refusal of our application to park on the property that I had submitted a couple of weeks ago, I sent another email explaining that we would not be parking on the road or on our driveway, but in the back of the property, behind the house and completely off the road. A very nice lady from the municipality called me, got the details and said it is OK! So we will be pulling in behind the house and parking there for the week. Not sure yet if we will stay in the RV or in the house, but at least we have the choice! We even took a drive to Whitby to measure the size of the gate. We will fit through with ease!

Below freezing temps for tonight, so we have put the 100 watt light into the plumbing bay to stop any freezing of the water connections. The propane cylinder is full for a night of heavy furnace use and we are all prepared.
